DIY: A PLUG HACK

I get very frustrated when I go to plug in a cord in a kitchen receptacle and it is the wrong direction. I know it only takes a second to flip it over but I never pick the right direction.

It inevitably happens when I only have one hand free or when I am doing several tasks at one time.

Here's a tip to make sure you choose the right direction Every Time. Once you do this, you'll wonder why you never thought of it before!

First, take your plug and plug it in the socket in the RIGHT direction.

Then, take your favorite color of magic marker and scribble a spot on what you determined to be the RIGHT side for each plug.

I use black on white plugs because I can see them better, but you can use RED or BLUE or any color that is better for you.

If your plugs are white, you can use black or red marker. If your plugs are black, try using bright red, neon green or a yellow highlighter.

Here are some more suggestions.

Check the right direction of your plug, then put your mark on it
Double-check the right direction of your plug,
then put your mark on it

Red shows well, but so does a yellow highlighter or neon green Red on white is also easy to see

Proper Storage For Basil

Keep Basil In The Sun

Proper storage for Basil
Basil needs sunlight

You shouldn’t store basil cuttings in the refrigerator because your basil needs sunshine. Basil wilts in the refrigerator.

Place your basil in a half cup of fresh cool water, and then place the cup on the sill of a sunny window. Your basil will last a lot longer. If it sprouts roots, it means that you can replant it and keep growing basil from that sampling.

Proper Storage For Cucumbers

Cucumbers don't fare well when they are stored in the fridge. They quickly become waterlogged and lose a lot of their flavor.

<img src="Cucumber.png" alt="storage">
Store on your counter or in the pantry, not in the refrigerator

If you store your cucumbers on your counter or in a pantry, keep an eye on them to check or spoilage. The smell of a rotten cucumber will alert you days after it spoiled which is not pleasant.

If you want cool cucumbers to put on your eyes or as another beauty treatment, just before you are ready to use them, dunk the slices of cucumber in ice water for 2 to 3 minutes, then remove and use.

use the freezer basket to pull out and hold door open
Pull out the bottom basket about halfway

If you are tired of the freezer door closing before you get to put away your frozen foods, here's a hack for you.

Pull out the bottom basket and leave it out till you put away your groceries.  It can stay open a few minutes.  It will save you some frustration and definitely save you from getting pissed off that the door closes so well.

Proper Storage For Carrots

Keep carrots out of direct sunlight

Carrots can become waterlogged or even rot if they are left in the refrigerator for too long. Store carrots away from direct sunlight in a place with low moisture, like a countertop away from the kitchen window or door.

If you have already cut up a bunch of carrots to serve that night for dinner, place them in a container of cool water, enough just to cover them. Put the container in the refrigerator until you are ready to cook them.

If you want to use them the next night for dinner, cook them first, cool, then refrigerate. Use within 24 hours or flash freeze them to use within 3 months.

Proper Storage For Bread

The Bread Goes In The Breadbox

Leaving your bread in the refrigerator dries it out. At cold temperatures, your bread will turn stale, dry, and tasteless. Also, bread acts as a kind of sponge and it will soak up whatever odors are lingering around your fridge.

To be safe, store leftover bread in a breadbox. If you don't have one, haunt the flea markets and garage sales and you can get one pretty cheap (under $5).  Mine is made of oak and I store breakfast pastries, bread, crackers, and cookies in the breadbox and they never go stale.  You can forgo the breadbox and store your bread in your microwave. Just be mindful that it is in there so you don't forget.

The bread box will keep moisture from escaping from the bread.

Remedies for Dry Cracked Feet

Cracked feet home remedies
Home remedies for cracked feet

If you don't know what causes dry cracked feet before you can apply any remedies, or if you are doing something that contributes to the cause, no remedy is going to help get rid of the condition.

CAUSES:

1) Standing on your feet for too long

2) Fluid retention followed by fluid reduction

3) Obesity

4) Cold weather

5) Caustic soaps

6) Excessive exposure to water (i.e. soaking feet routinely, not drying thoroughly after bathing, leaving oils and creams on skin instead or blending into skin until dry)

7) Rough towels and bed linens

8) Certain medications

9) Not using moisturizer

10) Psoriasis or other skin conditions

Most of the current remedies concentrate on a moisturizing regimen. Vaseline was the most recommended moisturizer.

Here is a short video with some remedies. Click the square at the bottom right of the video screen to view it full screen.

As you can see, prevention is the best remedy.

Cracked feet, dry socks, good shoes
Good fitting shoes and good
socks help cracked skin

Try to avoid exposing your feet to extremely hot or extremely cold weather by wearing the right footwear - good fitting shoes and dry socks, no matter what the weather is.

If you take baths, avoid using very hot water because it will dry out your skin. Check the soap or bath salts that you are using to see if it has sulfate or fragrances listed in the ingredients because both are drying agents.

Moisturize your feet two or three times a day and then put on socks so your skin retains the moisturizer. If you get pedicures, inquire if you can add a paraffin wax treatment at an appointment.  It isn't a permanent fix, but it will provide some relief for a few days.

For extremely dry cracked skin, you may need to get a prescription for steroid cream. If that isn't to your liking, consider using a liquid bandage to seal the cracks in your skin and prevent infections. Spray it on, put socks on, and forget about it.  The liquid coating dries fast. It is available over the counter. No prescription needed.

There is a DIY remedy circulating on the Internet saying that super glue has had good success. Considering that super glue seals things so well that they will never un-glue, there was a study done in the late 1990's where patients put three drops of super glue on each crack, then allowed it to seal.  A week later the cracks were closed. We can't attest to the pain level because pain is different for everyone. So if you try it, write in the comments and let us know how it worked out for you.

Baby Foot chemical peel gel-lined booties
Baby Foot Peel is a chemical peel
A product being hyped at the moment is called BABY FOOT PEEL, which is  a Japanese foot chemical peel that comes in the form of gel-lined booties.

The 1990's treatment has gone viral in 2018. Users have raved about the strips of dead skin that peel off after using the product, leaving their skin softer.

Here’s how it works: After soaking your feet, you wear the booties for an hour, letting the natural extracts and fruit acids soak in. About one to two weeks later, users say the dead skin starts to peel off in sheets, revealing soft “baby-like” feet. Such big claims need a user to write a comment to let us know if it is true.

Regularly exfoliating and applying moisturizing foot cream can help treat and prevent flaky, itchy, dry feet. Many experts recommend soaking your feet first in warm water to soften the skin, then using an exfoliating scrub to gently remove dead skin. To treat rough, dry or cracked heels, follow up with a moisturizer such as Gold Bond Triple-Action Foot Cream or Palmer’s Cocoa Butter Foot Magic with vitamin E.

A pumice stone removes dry, dead skin and calluses. This lightweight volcanic rock has a rough, porous texture that is perfect for sloughing off dead skin. Use it in the shower or after a bath a few times a week, rubbing the rougher areas of the feet to exfoliate. Follow up with moisturizer to seal.
